Every holiday season, many of our transferees ask how much they should tip their building staff. Tipping is not required, but it is recommended, appreciated and customary. It’s best to tip in early December, just ahead of the holiday season proper.

According to a poll conducted last year by Brick Underground, 65% of owners in doorman buildings spent from $250 to $1000; 37% of renters in similar buildings spent between $250 and $500 in total on tipping.

Here’s a helpful guideline for various building personnel, based on what we’ve heard around town.

WHO                                                    AVERAGE                BROAD RANGE

Superintendent/Resident Manager        $75 – $175             $50 – $500

Doorman/Concierge                                  $25 – $150             $10 – $1000

Porter/Handyman                                        $20 – $30              $10 – $75

Garage Attendant                                       $25 – $75              $15 – $100

‘Tis the season of caring and kindness. Please be as generous as your budget allows and the services received merit.
