If you’ve gotta get outta Gotham, you can choose from over 500 towns within commuting distance of the Big Apple where housing costs are somewhat more reasonable and the lifestyle less frantic.

Three destinations top the most desirable list. Reminiscent of matchmaker dating site criteria, the must-haves include short commutes, dining options and overall attractiveness. The winning communities are:

Irvington, Westchester County. Median home sale prices are around $1.1 million. The commute to Grand Central is about 50 minutes. And the town is home to super chef Michael Psilakis’ trendy restaurant, MP Taverna.

Pelham and Pelham Manor, North Bronx. Median home sale prices are around $607,000 and $729,500, respectively. The commute is a mere 31 minutes. In addition to Wolf’s Lane Delicatessen, the area also boasts the 30-acre New York Athletic Club whose amenities include a yacht club, tennis courts and private island.

Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Median home sale prices here are in the $840,000 range and include architectural gems designed by the likes of Stanford White, John Russell Pope and Frank Lloyd Wright. The commute is just under 50 minutes. A small town atmosphere and corresponding number of things to do prevail but, if you like boutiques and bucolic living, you’ll feel right at home.
